Overview of the Drug Education

Program Prep to Year 6   2009

Level 1     Prep
Lessons…     

  • Compare what you do when you feel healthy to when you feel ill.
  • Describe any illnesses you have had.
  • Identify common medications and their alternatives and discuss their safe use.
  • Identify people and services that help you when you are ill.

Level 2     Year 1 and 2
Lessons…

  • Discuss health conditions that are common in the age group eg asthma. Diabetes, colds, allergies…
  • Discuss remedies, medications, home care.
  • Sort into groups from: prescriptions/ doctors, chemists, supermarkets, home remedies.
  • List health services.
  • Sort into safe and risk groups.
  • Who dispenses medicines?
  • Where should they be kept?
  • Read packages and find warnings.
  • Describe responses to emergencies. Eg 000

Level 3    Year 3 and 4
Lessons…

  • Formulate and practise action plans for emergencies related to drug incidents.
  •  Discuss health concerns for smoking, syringes, poisons, and chemicals and strategies to address them.
  •  Talk to family members and friends about health issues.
  •  Collect advertisements and products related to health, identify their appeal, how they influence people’s choice.
  •  Compare information on labels; develop a set of criteria for use in selecting.
  •  Practise assertive ways to deal with harassment.  
  •  Contribute to a list of ways of describing people-both positive and negative. Consider how these affect feelings and self esteem. 
  •  Discuss how opinions and views change the way you behave. 
  •  Participate in challenging activities (role-play, games…) and discuss how it feels to meet these challenges.

Level 4     Year 5 and 6 
Lessons… 

  •  Research effects of cigarettes and alcohol … 
  •  Discuss affects on different roles, attitudes and relationships. 
  •  Analyse rules and behaviour.
  •  Identify physical, social and emotional changes. (You Can Do IT).
  •  Explore skills associated with negotiating friendship and social pressures. 
  • Identify support in times of need. 
  • Compare the advantages  and disadvantages of drugs in a Healthy Lifestyle.
