Year 3 & 4
Term 4 Overview
Inquiry Learning: “Let Me Entertain You!”
We are into the home stretch and have another busy term ahead.
Our Inquiry unit is titled “Let Me Entertain You,” the focus being on Design, Creativity and Technology. The students will investigate ideas on designing, preparing, producing and analysing their very own puppet. They will learn about different types of puppetry and use their puppets to perform plays they have written.
Once again, we look forward to many whole school activities, none more exciting than our end of year concert, along with Celebration Day to cap it all off!
Literacy
Our Reading program will continue to involve Modelled, Shared, Guided and Reciprocal Reading, with a focus on the poetry, procedural, play writing and entertainment genres. Literacy rotations will include fiction and non-fiction text, where students will become familiar with and learn more about the various puppet designs, as well as the stories they feature in.
During Writing sessions, students will continue to use the strategies outlined in ‘The Seven Steps to Writing Success’ program, and focus on producing their puppet play storylines. Students will also be given opportunities to further develop their skills in grammar and spelling.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students will work on applying number skills and the 4 processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to a variety of word problems. They will practice identifying and gathering the information within the problem in order to solve it. A further focus will be on revising topics we have worked on throughout terms 1, 2 and 3, on dimensions in Numeracy such ‘Number’ (decimals, fractions & money), ‘Chance & Data’ (data collection and presentation), ‘Space’ (transformation and 3D shapes) and ‘Measurement’ (volume and capacity).
Homework Expectations
In Year 3/4, it is expected that students complete 25 minutes of Homework per night. The homework program consists of:
-
5 nights of reading (15 minutes a night)
-
3 spelling activities using weekly spelling words
-
A Numeracy activity and
-
A choice of 2 other activities.
The Homework grid has a checklist to mark off everything as it gets done. This is a great way for parents to keep track as well. We ask that parents sign this sheet at the end of each week. This is in addition to assisting your child fill out their green reading log. Take home reading is an important aspect of our homework program and we encourage that students take responsibility in changing and returning their book/text as needed.
Students will have a weekly spelling test, so practise tests at home would be very helpful. The day of the test will depend on the indication of your child’s teacher.
Classroom Help
Thankyou to the parents who volunteered their time within the classroom this year. It is a great support to us and we encourage parents to become involved this term. Your child’s teacher will soon be sending home this term’s classroom timetable for parents interested in lending a hand.
