Teaching and learning at Williamstown North Primary School is guided by the Victorian Curriculum and our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Doing Your Best.
The English curriculum aims to ensure that students:
- learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex and sophisticated spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose
- appreciate, enjoy and use the English language in all its variations and develop a sense of its richness and power to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue
- understand how Standard Australian English works in its spoken and written forms and in combination with non-linguistic forms of communication to create meaning
- develop interest and skills in inquiring into the aesthetic aspects of texts, and develop an informed appreciation of literature.
At Williamstown North Primary School, we explore the core Victorian Curriculum strands of Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Probability. There is a fundamental emphasis on integrating numeracy into everyday life situations and deepening the understandings of our students.
Our school emphasises the importance of deepening the proficiency in mathematics by allowing students to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills. By embedding these practices in problem solving we challenge our students to think critically and understand that a variety of strategies can be used to address a problem.
At Williamstown North Primary School our instructional model is consistently implemented across all F-6 classrooms. In Numeracy, daily lessons develop student outcomes through learning intentions and success criteria, explicit teaching and modelling and differentiation of tasks to challenge learners at all levels. We develop and use proficiency scales to address point of need and set goals for students to achieve the next level in the numeracy learning.
