Assistant Principal's Report

Feeling Safe

We have been contacted by our neighbourhood schools, as some children from their schools reported feeling unsafe on their way to and from school. Now is a timely reminder to have a chat with your child/ren about safety when travelling to and from school.

Litter

We are suddenly seeing quite a lot of litter accumulating in the playground. Unfortunately it is evident that most of the wrappers, plastic bags and empty ‘snack’ packets are from our students snacks and lunches which is very sad.

Please remind your child/ren to put all ‘litter’ in the classroom bin, or the yellow bins in the playground, instead of dropping litter on the ground when they are not near a bin (especially those students playing on the green field). Remind your child/ren to put any litter in their pocket and then put it in a bin later. By doing this, all students can demonstrate the school Values of Respect and Responsibility.

Another way to help reduce litter is to use less wrappers and plastic when packing lunches. We strongly encourage as much ’nude’ food as possible, given the range of fabulous lunchboxes that are available.

Mother’s/Special Person’s Day

A big reminder that today there is a stall to celebrate Mother’s and Special Person’s Day, which is next Sunday 14th May.

Students can purchase a gift for their mum, aunty, grandma or any other special person in their family. Students will be taken to the stall at a designated time between 9.00am and 1.30pm. Please remember to send along some money for your child/ren to purchase a gift. For younger students it is a good idea to put their money in an envelope/bag with their name clearly written on it. Gifts are available from $1.00 to $5.00.

Enrolments for 2024

We are currently taking enrolments for 2024 for Prep as well as all other year levels.

Book Club

Our school participates in Scholastic Book Club. Up to twice a term, during the school year, a Club catalogue will be sent home with a different selection of books offered for all ages.

You’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. The books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests (some books cost as little as $2).

It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Book Club is cashless and paperless, orders are to be lodged only through.

LOOP. Order forms are not required to be sent to school.

If assistance is required, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classroom, however there is never any obligation to order.

Sincerely, Sue Smith, Organizer, Resource Centre.

CLOSING DATE FOR ISSUE 3 IS FRIDAY 12TH MAY 2023

ASTHMA

Winter Is Coming
Are you ready for the change in weather?

It’s cooling down across the country. Here’s our top tips for being asthma ready as the temperatures drop:

· Take your preventer every day, even when well.

· Wear a scarf around your mouth and nose when outside in the cold. This can help humidify and warm the air you are breathing and reduce symptoms.

· Staying up-to-date with your flu shot and COVID boosters can help support your immune system.

· Have an asthma review with your doctor and update your Asthma Action Plan.

If you need help or support managing your asthma, contact an Asthma Educator with Asthma Australia.

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Williamstown North is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

The PRC online application offers a range of exciting features including:

· access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)

· a modern user-friendly interface

· rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved

· the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

All students have been given a unique username and passcode. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you require another copy of your child’s login details.

To log on to the Premier’s reading challenge:

· Click on this URL: https://vprc.eduweb.vic.gov.au/home

· Click on the VRPC login.

· Fill out your child’s log in details

· Log any books that your child reads.
